The novel, The Sorrow of War by Bao Ninh is a thoughtful recap of a tender man named Kiens journey and refund of his war experience. This novel encapsulates the events of the Vietnam War which occurred between the years of November 1955 to April 1975 where the communistic party, northwestward Vietnam fought against the anti-communist parties, South Vietnam, Australia and the United States of America. The generator himself, Bao Ninh, was involved intimate the Vietnam War and was a member of the Glorious 27th young person Brigade. Of the 500 who went in the brigade to the war, he was star of the ten to survive. This novel is a narrative of Kien, a North Vietnamese soldier during the Vietnam War, chronicling his loss of innocence, love and anguish. In this novel, the author has utilise many literary devices to portray to the auditory modality the painfulness and sorrow Kiens was exposed to during the Vietnam War. Bao Ninh has episodic bearing and the symbolization of w omen in the novel to involve the audience into Kiens national emotions, battles and pain from the war. This structure has been by showing the pass meter and immediately switching back to Kiens past, ostentatiousness backs and memories. Bao Ninh uses this structure to create the audience to have the same emotions as the reference work which is Kien.

In most novels or plays, the source allows the audience to record what is going to pass along, or what may happen but keeps the characters remote from that information to create suspense. Ninh however has used emotions in Kien and too allows the audience to fee l the same. Page 167 describes the moments i! n which Phoung and Kien were attacked in the go over where Phuong was being violently abused. Kien was do by a arrest and he flung from the car into the raceway embankment...striking metal with such king he fainted (p168). Kien, from this hit became real confused and fell sideways, into a faint (p167). Ninh however does not finish this scenario until page 188 and cursorily skips to another scene.
